Awkward room?

Good.

Sloping ceilings. Eaves. Chimney breasts with two alcoves that are never quite the same size. Off-the-shelf furniture hates these spaces. Made-to-measure loves them. Working out how to use every inch of an awkward room is the bit of the job I enjoy most.

Fitted wardrobes

  • Full-height hinged or sliding wardrobes, wall to wall
  • Wardrobes built into chimney-breast alcoves
  • Wardrobes under sloping ceilings, in loft rooms and in the eaves
  • Built-in wardrobes using IKEA PAX frames, finished so they look fitted
  • Interiors to suit you: hanging rails, shelves, drawers and shoe storage

Alcove units and shelving

  • Low cupboards with shelving above
  • Full-height alcove cupboards
  • Floating shelves
  • Built-in bookcases and media units
  • Desk alcoves

Doors, skirting and architrave

  • Hanging new internal doors, with handles, hinges and locks
  • Trimming doors after new flooring goes down
  • New skirting boards and architrave
  • Boxing in pipes

Why fitted furniture has to be scribed

Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are rarely level. Push a unit against them and you get gaps down the side and along the top.

Scribing means marking the shape of the wall onto the edge of the unit and cutting it to match, so it sits tight from floor to ceiling. It's the difference between furniture that looks added and furniture that looks built in, and it's why I measure every space myself before quoting.

Materials and finishes

  • Painted MDF: smooth, stable and paints any colour. The usual choice for alcove units and painted wardrobes.
  • Birch plywood: strong, with a layered edge that suits a modern look.
  • Real wood, such as oak: for shelves and tops where you want to see the grain.
  • Plain, shaker or panelled doors.

I prime and paint what I build, so it's finished when I leave, not when you've found a decorator.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Tell me what you're after, and send a photo of the space if you can.
  2. Measure and quote. I measure the space and give you a free quote.
  3. Make and fit. Built, fitted, scribed to your room, then primed and painted if needed.

Is it cheaper to build a wardrobe in or buy one?

A freestanding wardrobe is usually cheaper to buy. A fitted one uses the full height and width of the space and fills awkward areas a freestanding one can't. IKEA PAX frames built in are a middle route: the fitted look for less than fully made to measure.

How deep should alcove cupboards be?

It depends on the depth of the chimney breast and what you'll store. They usually sit flush with the front of the chimney breast or just short of it. I'll measure and suggest a depth that works.

Can you build a TV unit into an alcove?

Yes. If you need new sockets or wiring, that's electrical work, and we have access to registered electricians who can help.

Do you paint the units?

Yes. I prime and paint what I build.

Are quotes free?

Yes.
